5 Tips For Ecotourism

When I travel, I try to make intentional choices throughout my trip since travel itself can have so many negative impacts on the environment. These are my top tips I use to make smarter, more sustainable choices.

  1. Pack Reusable Items

This is a big one, and the one I find most accessible! A good way to reduce waste is to limit the number of single use items you use on a trip. Sticking to simple items like reusable shopping bags, metal straws, and reusable water bottles can make a difference!

On a recent trip to San Francisco, I brought my favorite Proudly Asian tote and used it every day. In just one afternoon, we stopped at 5 different souvenir shops for gifts for family and friends. That would have been 5 single use plastic bags.

We also walked several miles a day sightseeing. Having a reusable water bottle meant we always had access to water, without having to overpay for single use bottles. Most restaurants and coffee shops were okay with refilling it for us, and some even had refill stations!

2. Buy Local

Whenever possible, I try to buy local, especially when traveling. This included food options, coffee shops, and other miscellaneous purchases. It’s so much more rewarding knowing you’re shopping a small business and truly contributing to a community.

3. Walk

Another thing I try to do as much as possible is walk instead of using other transportation options. There are situations where the distance is too far, or the terrain is too rough, but if walking is an option, do it! I find I am able to see so much more of the city I’m visiting and stumble across things I wouldn’t if I was only utilizing automotive transportation.

4. Eating in Restaurant

I know, ordering in is as great as it is convenient. However, actually going to a restaurant can limit the amount of single use items needed, and allows you to have a full experience. When I’m traveling, I prefer experiencing as much as possible. Eating in a restaurant and enjoying my coffee in a local shop allows me to take a second to really enjoy it, and it’s better for the environment!

5. Pack Eco Friendly Toiletries

The final thing I try to do is pack eco-friendly toiletries. This often means planning a little more ahead, but the options are definitely out there. A couple of my favorite eco-friendly toiletry options are bamboo toothbrushes, toothpaste tabs, and reusable toiletry bottles (i.e. shampoo, conditioner, etc.). Another great alternative is using bar soap instead of liquid soaps. Stay tuned for some of my favorite eco-friendly brands in future posts!
